History of Institute of Psychological Studies (IPS)
Institute of Psychological Studies started and developed by Prof. D S Ranawaka in 1983 with the help of Psychiatry Department faculty of Medicine University of Colombo.Prof. Ranawaka developed Sinhala terminology and published academic literature and books in Sinhala to enhance students psychology and counselling knowledge. He organized a professional body of professional counsellors and developed code of ethics for Sri Lankan counselling professionals.
Professor Ranawaka was the founder president of SLNIPC, Senior Vice President at present (see www.slnipc.com). Professor Tian oei and Professor Robert Schewetzer of Queensland University Australia provided guidance for the development of courses and provided clinical Training in the psychology clinic of the Queensland University.
University Grant Commission (UGC) invited him to start counselling programme in the university system in Sri Lanka. He developed a counselling programme suitable for school teachers in the Faculty of Education (see the background of directors for more details).
Professor Ranawaka initiated public counselling work and he was the pioneer and consultant to National youth council (NYC) and started ‘Youn Mithuro’ first public and school counselling network with the help of Professor Diyanath Samarasinghe and Dr.Rathnin Devaraja who was a Psychologist attached to the Department of Psychiatry. Professor Ranawaka has been conducted several workshops including Women’s Bureau, Social Services Department, Justice Ministry, Sri Lanka Army and other forces, Apperal sector including Brandix. He also, reorganized women in Need and employed professional counsellors mainely B.A Psy. graduates with the qualification of Diploma in counselling and Psychotherapy conducted by the Institute of Psychological studies, as family counsellors. He was the visiting psychologist of the centre of torture victims (FRC) Family Rehabilitation centre attached to ICT in Denmark university medical faculty.
